Staci MacGregor
Driving on a Highway Just Outside the City

clouds break just right today
and there’s a flat
wall
of sunlight that comes down

(this kind of imagery is often used
when referring to God
or heaven)

when I was little
I used to think that these
beams of light
pointed to catastrophes
like hurricanes and apartment fires
and ten-car pileups on the freeway
and that bit of light was
so big and noticeable because God was
taking a bunch of souls
all at once.
