At the Intersection of Faith and Work |
|
Since its founding by the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, Viterbo has had a proud history of its alumni living out their faith in their working lives. In this edition of the alumni newsletter, we have a look at a few of their stories.
►The Rev. Brian Konkol '01 started at Viterbo intent on becoming an attorney, but he found a ministry path instead that led him to being dean of Hendricks Chapel at Syracuse University.
►For music major Emily (Hund) Dykman '98, returning to Viterbo as a religious studies professor was strange at first, but now she feels like she's right where she belongs.
►Since graduating from Viterbo, Lynnae (Salzwedel) Schatz '84 has had a career in nursing and ministry. She's led a life characterized by a solid core of caring. |

Celebrating Sr. Thea Bowman Viterbo held a week of activities in honor of Thea Bowman, FSPA '65, inaugurating a new tradition of celebrating her every year on the March 30 anniversary of her death in 1990.
The week saw the launch of the Sr. Thea Bowman Center to celebrate her life and to advance her legacy of "living in love" by providing resources for education and understanding of human dignity and social justice.
Panel discussions during Sr. Thea Bowman Week featured friends, Viterbo colleagues, and former students of hers, including Mary (Garvey) Verrill '78, pictured here with Sr. Thea on commencement day in 1978. Verrill recently published a book on Sr. Thea's life, Thea Bowman: A Story of Triumph.
Check out Viterbo's Flickr page to see photographs from the week's activities as well as other campus happenings, including the Agnes H.W. Tan Science Symposium, the alumni networking night event, and the President's Day of Service.

New Graduation Traditions
Viterbo University is preparing to celebrate the accomplishments of 296 undergraduates and 132 graduate students at this year's commencement ceremony, which starts at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at the La Crosse Center. No tickets are required, and all are welcome to attend.
This year, Viterbo launches two new graduation traditions. On May 12, President Rick Trietley is inviting all graduating seniors to have dinner at the Mathy Center with him at the inaugural Senior Soirée with the President. The Senior Soirée is sponsored by the Phil and Barb Quillin family.
In addition, an inaugural candlelight Sending and Blessing Ceremony for graduating seniors and their families starts at 8 p.m. Friday, May 13, the eve of commencement, with a reception in the Fine Arts Center FSPA lobby after the ceremony.
Don't Forget about Charitable Requests
Charitable bequests are one of the best ways to achieve philanthropic goals, including showing support for Viterbo University. In fact, the bequest is the most frequently used method to support charity in America. Bequests can take several forms:
-
A specific dollar amount
-
A percentage of the estate
-
Specific assets
Think philanthropy is reserved for a select few? Not so. The truth is every bequest to Viterbo is vital in helping us continue our mission.
