Hecker's Service Mission Comes Full Circle
Richard Hecker '78 has spent much of his career as a physician assistant providing medical care for underserved populations, both in the United States and around the world. Service has been a lifelong core value for him, and in this time of crisis for many Viterbo University students, he has stepped up to help ease the struggle.
“Viterbo did a lot of shaping of me and I realize how important that was for me,” Hecker said. “Viterbo is a learning experience, but Viterbo is also a life experience, and both are equally important and both of them shaped my life to where I am.”

For Nursing Grad, COVID-19 Offers Teachable Moment
Katie Drury '08, who earned her nursing degree from Viterbo like her mother before her, has used her own bout with COVID-19 to help increase awareness of the disease and what it takes to prevent its spread.
Drury is director of nursing in the Onalaska School District and taught in the nursing school for several years, so education is a key part of her nursing mission.
Among the earliest COVID-19 cases in the La Crosse area, Drury was the first to go public with her diagnosis, as uncomfortable as it was for her to make a public post about herself on Facebook.
“I wanted people to know that it was me,” Drury said. “I’m a nurse. My job is to make sure people are educated, and I wanted to make sure people know that nobody is immune.”

Service Saturday Goes Virtual This Year Service Saturdays are as much a part of life at Viterbo University as Murphy Center or Dancing Francis, and the annual President’s Day of Service is Franciscan service at its best. This year, that day was to be April 18, but because participants can’t safely fan out into the community to do good, there’s a new twist.
The President’s Day of Service this year is virtual, and it’s not just one day. It’s an effort that runs through the end of May to highlight creative ways of serving the community and the common good through a doorway in cyberspace.
For the April 18 kickoff, about 30 projects from at least 50 participants were submitted, including donating more than 600 masks, delivering more than 220 cards or letters, and serving more than 50 meals to people in need.
All Viterbo alumni are invited to join students, faculty, staff, and community members in spreading goodness. Not sure where to start? Check out this new video for ideas and check out the President’s Day of Service page for more details.

At the end of every teaching week, Viterbo University theatre and music theatre faculty member Erin Jerozal honors it by folding an origami crane. In this video, she gives a short tutorial on how to fold it and why the process is so meaningful for her.
