The summer lull on the Viterbo campus comes to an end next week with the return of faculty, staff, and students (classes start Aug. 29).
In no time we’ll already be through September and ready to celebrate our alumni with the annual Viterbo Days festivities Oct. 6–9.
Then we have a celebration of Viterbo’s 10th president with inauguration activities Oct. 12–15 for President Rick Trietley.
In the meantime, your August alumni newsletter features stories celebrating three of Viterbo’s outstanding alumni:
A LIFE OF SCIENCE: Since graduating from Viterbo with a biology degree, Joe Paulauskis ’78 has led a remarkably impactful life of science, as a researcher, teacher, and innovative leader in industry and academia. MAGNUM OPUS: Knowing the success Matt Curtis ’08 has had with an innovative music business he started and considering an ambitious new La Crosse venue he is launching called the Cappella Performing Arts Center, you might think he’d earned an MBA from Viterbo instead of music degrees in music performance and music education. CHIEF FUN OFFICER: Amanda Meyer ’08 didn’t have to look very far for her first job after graduating from Viterbo University in 2008. In fact, it turned out her place of employment, Viterbo's recreation department, was located literally just out the window from where she lived as a first-year student. Meyer recently was named the university's director of recreation. READ MORE |

Common Read Next Up for Alumni Book Club
The next Viterbo University Alumni Virtual Book Club selection is this year's university Common Read, I Take My Coffee Black: Reflections on Tupac, Musical Theater, Faith, and Being Black in America, a memoir by Tyler Merritt.
An actor, comedian, activist, and viral video sensation, Merritt comes to campus Wednesday, Sept. 7, to kick off the 2022–23 D.B. Reinhart Institute for Ethics in Leadership lecture series. His talk, which starts at 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Main Theatre, is open to all (no tickets required). Merritt's program also will be streamed live on the Reinhart Institute's Facebook page.

Alum's Book, Online Classes Focus on Leadership
Servant Leadership from the Middle, a new book by Bernard Osborne '21, will be available in October as the first title in a new servant leadership book series, a collaboration between Viterbo's Reinhart Institute for Ethics and Leadership and Fulcrum Publishing.
Aimed at emerging managers and leaders and grounded in conventional servant leadership, Osborne's book delivers fresh perspectives and guides practitioners through techniques and concepts to enhance anyone's leadership abilities. Sprinkled with anecdotes and leadership lessons, Osborne brings meaningful workplace applications to anyone’s servant leadership practice.
A book launch event is planned for 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, at Pearl Street Books, 323 Pearl St. in La Crosse.
ONLINE CERTIFICATE: Registration is now open for a seven-week Viterbo University online certificate course in servant leadership starting Sept. 13 to be taught by Viterbo Distinguished Professor of Servant Leadership Tom Thibodeau and learning and talent development consultant Robert Toomey.
The cost for the self-paced course is $799, and online registration will be accepted up to the first session of the course.
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: People involved in La Crosse area nonprofit organizations are invited to take part in a nine-month Certificate of Nonprofit Leadership Development program offered by Viterbo's Center for Professional Learning.
Program participants will meet for four hours in the morning on the second Thursday of the month from September through May. Cost is $1,400 for the full certificate program. Participants also can choose to register for individual sessions at a cost of $145 each.

Day of Giving
Viterbo's fourth annual Day of Giving is a chance for alumni, families, employees, and friends to declare their support of the university's mission with a financial contribution. We need 800 donors to step up to reach this year's goal. Those who want to be counted as Viterbo supporters and give us a head start on the goal can give a gift of any amount online at dayofgiving.viterbo.edu. Together, we can make a difference for current and future Viterbo students.
Stories Rolling in for History Project
As of Aug. 9, 2,664 Viterbo alumni had responded to the ongoing oral history project, with 2,012 stories offered and more than 3,000 updates to alumni contact information.
The stories and memories shared by alumni with representatives from PCI are all recorded and give to Viterbo to preserve the university's history and legacy. Many of the stories also will be included in a hard-cover coffee table book available for purchase from PCI.
The collection of stories and information updates continues through Dec. 2, so there is still time to share your stories by calling 877-603-4366.
For more information, visit Viterbo's oral history project webpage.
