February alumni newsletter feature topics

Saints, Teaching, and Treasure

The Viterbo campus is back in action after digging out from a major winter storm last week. We are so looking forward to the arrival of spring, which this year will include the second annual Sister Thea Bowman Week at the end of March. Meanwhile, read on for more campus news and alumni news.

FRANCISCAN TO THE CORE: Staff, student, veteran, and alumni pilgrimages to Assisi, Italy, strengthen the university's connections to St. Francis and St. Clare. (Learn more about an alumni and friends Franciscan heritage tour of Italy planned for Oct. 23–Nov. 1.)

TRIPLE THREAT: Tara Allert '16, '18, '21 is putting her three Viterbo degrees to good use, helping middle and high school students manage mental health issues through an innovative partnership and training the university's next wave of counselors as an adjunct professor.

FINDING TREASURE: It’s been more than 20 years since Rick Cornforth '01 graduated from Viterbo, but memories of his college days recently came flooding back after a surprise discovery.

Viterbo University 2005 Alumni Award winners

Alumni in Action

Viterbo alumni have options galore to support the university in its mission and stay connected:

►NAME NAMES: More than 160 have been honored with Distinguished Alumni Awards since 1967, and we've been working on our award webpage to add more photos and bios of past winners (like the 2005 honorees pictured above). If you know of someone who should be honored, let us know by Friday, March 3, through our online award nomination form.

►GET ON BOARD: The Viterbo University Alumni Association has room for a few new members on the board, which meets next on April 20. Alumni board members can attend meetings virtually, so geography is not an issue.

►ANSWER THE CALL: Viterbo students are calling university supporters through March 10 as part of the spring phonathon to connect about campus experiences and opportunities to support the institution's mission.

►LEND A HAND: Alumni get involved in a variety of campus activities, from speaking on professional panels to helping with event logistics. Coming up at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 1, for example, alumni are invited to have breakfast and visit with the new batch of incoming students and their families as part of the Accepted Student Day event.

►CHOOSE TO SCHMOOZE: Catch up with other alums and Viterbo community members at our First Thursday socials. The next event is TUESDAY, April 4, a pizza party at La Crosse's historic Bluffside Tavern, and we're planning a La Crosse Loggers baseball outing Thursday, June 1, at The Lumberyard in Copeland Park.

CONNECT WITH KATHY: Kathy Duerwachter, Viterbo's director of alumni engagement, has answers to your questions. Just email Kathy or call 608-796-3072.

Alumni Oral History Project

Oral History Project Update

A huge thank you to the 3,690 alumni who took part in the Oral History Project, offering 2,553 stories to document Viterbo's rich legacy. Many of the stories will be included in a richly illustrated book, with delivery to those who ordered coming this summer (and copies going to the Viterbo archives and the Library of Congress for posterity). Project participants who ordered Viterbo gear will receive those items this spring.

Platinum Edition reunion

A Swan Song for Nancy Allen

Join us in honoring Nancy Allen '84 and celebrating 25 years of Viterbo show choir as she directs Platinum Edition and Diamond Edition for one last performance before her May retirement. Celebration 2023, this year's spring show choir concert, hits the Fine Arts Center Main Theatre stage on Saturday, April 22.

Show choir alumni are encouraged to dust off their dancing shoes and perform two songs (Seasons of Love and New York State of Mind) with fellow alumni in the spring concert.

Friday evening and Saturday afternoon rehearsals are planned for show choir alums, as are a Friday night social, a noon retirement lunch for Nancy, and a post-concert pizza party at Houghton's.

For more information or to register to perform, visit the online registration page or register by phone at 608-796-3076. Signup deadline is April 13.

Buy tickets for Celebration 2023 through the Fine Arts Center online box office.

Learn about Compression Planning

Viterbo's Center for Professional Learning will host an in-person class on the McNellis Compression Planning System from April 12–14, led by Patrick McNellis, co-founder of the Compression Planning Institute, and Peter Hughes of Hughes Strategy LLC.

Compression planning is an interactive process designed to improve the efficacy of planning meetings by converting needs into ideas with measurable results.

Cost of the class is $2,295. Visit the online registration page for more information or to sign up.
