Coronavirus Outbreak Impact Felt at Viterbo
Hi %%firstname%%
The coronavirus outbreak is having a major impact around the world, including on the Viterbo University campus. So far, the La Crosse area has had no cases of COVID-19—as the illness caused by the new coronavirus strain is known—but Viterbo is taking steps to help prevent spread of the disease.

| On March 12, Viterbo President Glena Temple informed the university community that spring break was extended a week, after which classes would be offered online until at least April 14. In addition, all events in the Fine Arts Center through April 8 were cancelled or suspended.
In addition, the university has cancelled a number of events in which alumni were to participate, including March Madness speed mock interviews, Countdown to Commencement, the March 25 Milwaukee social, and the April 1 Alumni Association gathering at Leo & Leona’s Tavern and Dancehall.
The Viterbo website has a page dedicated to updates and resources related to COVID-19. |

Alumni Association Board Seeking New Members
Applications are now being accepted for new members of the Viterbo University Alumni Association Board.
There will be 10 openings on the 30-member board, which meets four times per year, working to support and enhance the university’s mission and values in a wide variety of ways. Board members can serve up to two three-year terms, after which they can stay involved on the Alumni Emeritus Board.
New members will begin service in July, by which time work is expected to be completed on a board committee reorganization and strategic plan.
More details on the board’s mission and activities, a roster of current board members, and a nomination form for new members can be found on the alumni association website. Email Kathy Duerwachter, alumni director, for more information.
Prospective board members are welcome to attend the next quarterly meeting, which will start at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, in the Viterbo School of Nursing Building, room 195.
Below are links to profiles of two alumni board members: Julia Callaghan ’15, who is in her first term on the board, and Juan Jimenez ’01, ’06, a past board president who is completing his second term. |

Second Chance Made All the Difference for Nancy Allen |
|
| When Nancy Allen ’84 first started college at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, she had such a wild streak that she got kicked out of school. Thinking her chance at a college education was shot, she was working at a gas station and giving piano lessons when she got invited to accompany the Viterbo concert choir on piano.
She shone as an accompanist, and Daniel Johnson-Wilmot, the choir director, urged her to continue her studies at Viterbo. Wayne Wojciechowski, the dean of students, decided to enroll her for a probationary semester.
Given that second chance, she thrived, and in 1998 she grabbed the chance to give back to Viterbo by joining the teaching staff in the music department.
“That second chance made all the difference for me,” Allen said.
That first year on the Viterbo staff, Allen started the Platinum Edition show choir, which she took to Nashville recently. On that trip, Allen and the |

Memorial Tributes Pour in for 'Sister Doctor Dean Jean' |
| The Viterbo University family lost a cherished member when Jean Moore, FSPA, passed on March 3. A large collection of remembrances of her from friends, colleagues, and former students has been posted on the Viterbo website, and additional tributes can still be submitted.
Sr. Moore started at Viterbo in 1993 teaching Spanish, and she also served as a dean, vice president, and director of mission integration. A story in the La Crosse Tribune in 2006 came close to capturing her unique charm.
In recognition of the many ways in which Sr. Moore advanced and enhanced Viterbo's mission, she was chosen as one of this year's recipients of the St. John XXIII Award for Distinguished Service. When it became clear she would not be around for the awards ceremony, Viterbo officials presented the award to Sr. Moore at the hospital, with her family present for the honor. |

Alumni Touch Base at Brewers Game in Arizona
Viterbo University alumni were among the more than 80 people who got together for a March 1 event at the Milwaukee Brewers spring-training ballpark in Phoenix, Ariz. In addition to members of the Viterbo University Alumni Association, the event also included people connected with Aquinas High School and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater La Crosse. Pictured above are Viterbo officials who traveled to Phoenix to take part in the event, from left: Vice President for Advancement Jim Salmo, President Glena Temple, and Director of Major and Planned Gifts Eric Schmidt '08, '17. Pictured below are Clayton and Cheryl Berglund '04. More photos from the event can be found on the alumni association Facebook page.
