November 2020
Great Is Their Thankfulness
November traditionally is a time when Americans contemplate our good fortunes and show gratitude for our blessings. This year, the shadow of a global pandemic has everyone facing unprecedented challenges. As we consider why we are grateful, those thoughts have a way of shining a light on our life. To quote St. Francis: “A single sunbeam is enough to drive away many shadows." This month’s newsletter includes three profiles in which alumni express their gratitude and shine a light for all of us to see.
Barry Lee Moe
Getting on the Right Path
If Barry Lee Moe '01 had gotten a chance to get on stage to give a speech after winning his first Emmy Award in September, he would have expressed his gratitude for the “angels” who have dropped into his life. There have been many, and he met one of his most important angels at Viterbo. “What I didn’t anticipate was finding a whole new focus while I was in college and ending up leaving school a changed person with a new passion," Moe says.

JayVon and Megan Adams
Gratitude Drives Giant Gratuity

JayVon and Megan Adams both graduated in 2017 with bachelor's degrees in business administration. They reflect often on how fortunate they are, even in the midst of a pandemic. It’s common for that gratitude to become good fortune for someone else, sometimes in a big way. Maybe even a life-changing way. After a recent visit to the Viterbo campus, the couple surprised a server with a well-timed $600 tip.

Adam Dickinson
Launching a Life of Service

Sport and spirituality attracted Adam Dickinson ’12 to Viterbo University, and he remains grateful he had the opportunity to be a V-Hawk. Viterbo was Dickinson’s springboard to a full and fulfilling life that is still unfolding, a life as an Army officer that has given him a chance to see the world. For Dickinson, who played four years on the golf team, it all started with joining ROTC at Viterbo.

Viterbo’s Center for Professional Learning and Development will offer a leadership development workshop in December for regional nonprofit board members, in partnership with the La Crosse Community Foundation.

The purpose of the workshop is to provide an introduction to financial oversight and cover critical topics, such as financial literacy, monitoring, and reporting.

The live online workshop will have three 90-minute sessions starting at 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 4, 11, and 18. Early registration is encouraged as enrollment limited to 25.

Explore Graduate School Options

Thinking about adding a master's degree to your resume? Viterbo has many options outlined on its graduate programs page.

The Master of Arts in Education program, for example, is offered online, now with an emphasis on applied coursework that is relevant to the needs of teachers and administrators today. After 15 core credits, MAE students select electives or an add-on licensure as their area of emphasis.

Scholarships Aid Alumni Children

Each year, in the name of Celestine Cepress, FSPA, the Viterbo Alumni Association board awards one or more one-time scholarships of at least $1,000 to freshmen or transfer students whose parents or legal guardians are Viterbo University graduates.

Criteria for the scholarships are as follows:

  • Must be an incoming freshman or transfer student.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • A parent or legal guardian must have earned at least 45 credits at Viterbo.

In addition, children of alumni who are  incoming freshmen  admitted prior to Jan. 15 may be eligible for a renewable $1,000 annual alumni scholarship.

Students must apply for the Sr. Celestine Scholarship by Jan. 15 to be eligible. Find more details about cost and aid for freshmen or transfer students.
