A Message from President Rick Trietley |

Greetings V-Hawk parents and families,
It might be difficult to believe, but the end of the academic year is less than a month away. Special events such as the Student Recognition Awards Ceremony, the Athletics Awards Banquet, and the Senior Soirée will honor the achievements of our students in the weeks leading up to commencement, which is May 13. Personal touches such as these are one of the hallmarks of the Viterbo educational experience and are greatly enjoyed by students.
One of the biggest news items of the semester has been the appointments of two key campus leaders. Amy Schmidt was named vice president for finance and administration and chief financial officer (CFO) effective May 16. She is the former vice president for finance and administration at Minnesota State College Southeast in Winona, Minn. Tonya Wagner was named vice president for academic affairs and institutional effectiveness effective immediately. She had served in the interim role since November 2022. Both are excellent administrators and will be members of the university’s senior leadership team.
I am also happy to report that a Higher Learning Commission review resulted in Viterbo meeting all five criteria for accreditation without required monitoring. This is the highest possible rating and one earned by no more than half of the HLC institutions reviewed during a given year. The members of the Viterbo HLC leadership team did an outstanding job, and I thank them for their efforts.
In other good news, Viterbo University has been designated a Top 10 Gold Military Friendly School for 2023–2024. This is the second year in a row Viterbo has earned this high distinction. It is one of only 10 schools in the “private college offering a doctorate” category in the nation to earn Top 10 Gold designation.
Thank you, parents and families, for entrusting Viterbo with your student’s education. I wish all our graduating seniors the best of luck in the future. I hope their time at the university was as special to them as it was to us. To the parents and families of students returning to campus in the fall, rest assured that we will continue to provide them the best education possible.
Have a fantastic summer.
Pace e Bene (Peace and All Good),
Rick Trietley

Cause for Celebration
We’ve had quite a few things to cheer about on campus this semester:
►The dance team took seventh at nationals, and Nyah Brooks (pictured) was named the NAIA’s Co-Dancer of the Year, with four teammates also earning All-America honors: Erin Walters, Jessalyn Wilson, Madelyn Dibble, and Vanessa Wong.
►The women’s volleyball team compiled a 39-2 record (including a program record 32 straight victories) and had five players earn All-America honors: Miah Garant, Maya Roberts, Kenzie Winker, Katie Frohmader, and Adrianna Reinhart.
►Viterbo came through its Higher Learning Commission accreditation review with flying colors, four years after the HLC’s comprehensive evaluation.
►For the second straight year, the university was designated a Top 10 Gold Military Friendly School.
►Tonya Wagner was named vice president for academic affairs and institutional effectiveness, after serving in an interim capacity since November 2022. In addition, Amy Schmidt, who earned a Viterbo MBA in 2011, has been named chief financial officer and vice president for finance and administration. |

End of Semester Means Some Big Moves
It’s hard to believe there’s just a month left before the 2022–23 school year is complete. That means a big transition is coming soon for the more than 550 students living on the Viterbo campus.
University housing closes for the summer at 6 p.m. Friday, May 12. All students in campus housing will complete a checkout, either with their RA or by themselves with a self-checkout envelope. Instructions will be provided the week before finals. All room keys and garage door openers should be returned at that time to avoid any replacement fees.
Students who have housing with storage lockers provided will need to have them emptied by 10 a.m. April 21 so next year’s occupants can shift items over before heading home for the summer.
Does your student need to stay on campus for part (or all) of the summer? Summer housing reservations are now available. Students are invited to stay on campus for anywhere between one week and the entire summer. For more information or to register, visit our summer housing website. Reservations should be submitted by May 1.
Find more student housing information in the Residence Life section of the Viterbo website. |

Summer Classes Make Financial Sense
A long break from school work probably sounds pretty good to your student right now, but sticking around for summer classes is worth considering.
Summer is a great time for nursing majors to complete prerequisite classes or other majors to take core curriculum courses. These summer classes are offered at a discounted rate of $295 per credit (plus $80 lab fee for some courses).
In addition, undergraduates in majors that have for-credit internships in their graduation requirements can take advantage of the discounted summer rates for internship, which are offered tuition-free (a $75 per credit course fee applies). We already have a record number of undergrads signed up for summer internships, but there is room for more. To register for internship classes, students can email Alyssa Gostonczik, director of advising and career development.
Students also ought to be thinking about what they’ll be taking in the fall. Students must have approval from their assigned advisor before they try to register for fall classes. Students will want to check for their registration time and assigned advisor so they can set up a time to meet with them for approval. Registration for fall started April 11.

Did You Know?
This May marks 20 years since the first cohort of Viterbo's Master of Arts in Servant Leadership program graduated. The MASL program, the only one of it's kind, is going strong and has been expanded to include an online servant leadership certificate program (the next session starts in September), a doctoral degree program, an annual servant leadership conference (this year's is June 29-30), and a number of other community education events.
