A Message from Kirsten Gabriel
Kirsten Gabriel

Greetings V-Hawk parents and families,

I hope you enjoyed the holidays and shared some quality time with your students during this break between semesters.

As some of you might be aware, Tina Johns has retired from Viterbo, where she has put a high priority on communicating and connecting with parents and families. We are incredibly grateful for her almost 30 years of service, and we wish her the best as she transitions to the next phase of life. During this interim phase, I look forward to connecting and partnering with you in more significant ways.

One way we can connect is through Viterbo’s upcoming virtual parent and family town hall, scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 2. This town hall will include highlights and information from various campus departments, with plenty of time for questions. Please know you can reach out to us at any point with your questions, concerns, or if you’d simply like more information.

Meanwhile, I hope you’ll enjoy this edition of our newsletter, in which you’ll find connections to campus, get useful information, and meet Tonya Wagner, Sara Cook, and Chad Gilbeck, dean of Viterbo’s College of Business, Leadership, and Ethics, vice president for academics, and help desk director, respectively.

As always, thank you for sharing your student with us. We consider it our joy and great responsibility to challenge, support, inspire, and educate your student as they grow into the faithful servants and ethical leaders our world so deeply needs.

CAMPUS CONNECTIONS
Viterbo President's Holiday Dinner
A Semester to Celebrate

And just like that, fall semester 2021 at Viterbo University is in the books, coming to a conclusion in festive fashion with the traditional President's Holiday Dinner (pictured above). At this event, faculty and staff serve a Christmas feast to students just before the start of final exams. Following on the heels of the dinner was the winter commencement ceremony celebrating Viterbo's newest batch of graduates.

The photo galleries from commencement, the holiday dinner, and many other events capture highlights from the semester. Check them out. It's the next best thing to being here.

Sylvia Hood Washington
Springing Forward

Spring semester at Viterbo kicks off Jan. 17 with the annual day of activities celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., capped by a keynote speech in the Fine Arts Center by Dr. Sylvia Hood Washington, a groundbreaking author and environmental engineer/historian.

The Fine Arts Center kicks into high gear next semester. Student-produced productions hit the stage along with a touring production of The Great Gatsby, Canadian Brass, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, musical tributes to The Eagles and The Bee Gees, and much more. Check out the schedule on the Fine Arts Center website.

HOUSING CORNER

Looking Ahead to the 2022–23 School Year

The Office of Residence Life has two updates for you as we look forward to the coming academic year.

Resident Assistant applications are now available. Could this be an opportunity for your student? This exciting and rewarding role plays a critical part in supporting our students who live on campus, and all majors are encouraged to apply. Applications are due Feb. 21.

Those interested in living on campus next year should fill out their housing contract and pay their $100 deposit before March 18 to take part in the priority selection process. Sophomore students are required to live on campus, and junior/senior students are invited to live in one of our upper-class buildings. Check out our Guide to the Student Housing Selection Process for more details.

If your student is exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms, please have them contact health services at 608-796-3806 or healthservices@viterbo.edu for potential testing and determination of next steps, even if they are fully vaccinated.
COUNSELING CORNER
Watch for Signs of Winter Blues

It is not uncommon to struggle with feeling “blue” during the winter months. It could be lack of sunlight resulting in seasonal affective disorder, which can be treated with vitamin D and use of a sunlight lamp. On the other hand, it could be major depression, which would require more involved treatment and support.

With major depression, people could find these symptoms impacting them:
  • Feeling depressed most of the day, nearly every day
  • Loss of interest in activities one enjoys
  • Experiencing low energy
  • Difficulty with sleep
  • Changes in appetite
  • Increased irritability
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feeling of hopelessness
  • Thoughts of suicide
Major depression is a medical condition that can be treated in many different ways. If your student is expressing any of these symptoms, counseling services is here to help support and direct students to appropriate treatment. The counseling services office is offered at no charge to all Viterbo students and is a good choice as one of the first places to turn to for support.

Need More Help? Viterbo University has mental health services available through the Counseling Services Center or encourage your student to download the My SSP app.
CAMPUS MINISTRY
Viterbo’s Campus Ministry offers myriad opportunities for students to practice and grow in their faith. Here’s a taste of what’s ahead for spring semester:
  • Table of Plenty: Supper and Scripture (a meal and Bible study) on Monday evenings
  • Taize Prayer worship service on Wednesday nights
  • Coffee and breakfast in Campus Ministry from 9–11 a.m. Thursdays
  • Campus Ministry book study sessions (dates TBA)
  • Coffee with Clare, a weekly morning Bible study group (dates TBA)
  • Praise and Worship two evenings per month in San Damiano Chapel (dates TBA)
  • Campus Ministry service trip to Milwaukee’s Casa Romero (March 14–18)

Did You Know?
Thea Bowman, FSPA, a 1965 graduate of Viterbo who went on to teach at the university, is under consideration for sainthood. The granddaughter of a slave, Sr. Bowman could become the first Black woman to be canonized. A celebration of her legacy will be held at Viterbo at the end of March.
