A Message from Kirsten Gabriel
Kirsten Gabriel

Greetings V-Hawk parents and families,

I hope you enjoyed the holidays and were able to spend some quality time with your student during this break between semesters.

As we mark the beginning of a new calendar year and the start of a new semester, I’m profoundly grateful for the partnership that exists between Viterbo and you, our students’ parents and family members. Thank you for the ways we work together to help your student learn, grow, and thrive during their time with us.

One way I hope we can continue to build our partnership is through Viterbo’s next virtual parent and family town hall, scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, March 2. This town hall will include highlights and information from various campus departments as well as plenty of time for questions. Please join us if you’re able!

Additionally, please know you can reach out to us any time via the contact information listed below with your questions, concerns, and feedback.

Meanwhile, I hope you’ll enjoy this edition of our newsletter, in which you’ll find campus updates and meet Jason Howard, professor of philosophy, and Sam Morris, our director of military student success.

As always, thank you for sharing your student with us. We look forward to 2023 and the myriad ways we’ll support, challenge, inspire, and educate your student as they discern their path and the unique ways they’ll change our world for the better.

All the best,

Kirsten Gabriel

CAMPUS CONNECTIONS
Viterbo President Rick Trietley inauguration
Special Memories

Fall semester seems like it was over in a flash, maybe because campus was so busy.

A few of the highlights include the inauguration of Richard Trietley as Viterbo's 10th president, our Agnes Tan Science Symposium, and a premiere screening of a documentary about Sr. Thea Bowman, a candidate for sainthood who was a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, graduated from Viterbo in 1965, and taught here in the 1970s.

Check out our photo galleries from those events and more to get a taste of fall semester 2022 campus life, and watch for more galleries as spring semester unwinds.

Andre Johnson
A Busy Spring Ahead

Spring semester at Viterbo kicks off Jan. 16 with the annual day of activities celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., capped by a keynote speech in the Fine Arts Center by Dr. Andre Johnson, a renowned speaker, author, and faculty member at the University of Memphis.

The Fine Arts Center and the Weber Center for the Performing Arts will be hopping spring semester, with student-produced productions as well as touring shows. Student highlights include The Pirates of Penzance, Significant Other, The Hello Girls, and the show choir program's Celebration 2023.

Professional productions coming to Viterbo stages include Hairspray, Black Violin, the Pilobolus dance troupe, musical tributes to The Beatles, Carole King, Ray Charles, and Led Zeppelin, and much more. Check out the schedule on the Fine Arts Center website.

HOUSING CORNER

Looking Ahead to 2023–24

We’re just starting spring semester, but it is not too early to think about next fall and register for housing. In fact, most students already have submitted their housing contracts to live on campus next year.

However, if your student has not, there is still time. The housing selection process for the 2023–24 academic year will occur soon, so NOW is the time to finalize and submit all on-campus housing contracts.

Sophomore students are required to live on campus. Junior, senior, and graduate students are invited to complete contracts to live in our exceptional upper-class housing. Housing selection process details are available online with details regarding housing, dining, and resident parking.

COUNSELING CORNER
Always Ready to Lend an Ear

We at counseling services hope you and your family had peaceful and restorative time during this winter break. As Viterbo’s campus comes back to life for the new semester, perhaps you might find the opportunity to speak to your student about using our services.

Far too often students avoid “speaking with someone” or look to TikTok to self-diagnose mental health concerns. People are adaptable and often find creative ways to get their needs met, which means you might not be seeing the full picture of your student’s mental health.

As a staff, we are not looking to make problems where they don’t exist, but we can provide a free, safe, and professional environment for your student to explore who they are and who they are becoming. Even if counseling is not for you, it might be for your student, so challenge them to try something new … it is college, after all.
FINANCE CORNER
Don't Forget About Summer Aid

"Spring" semester is about to begin (still feels like winter here), but some students might want to be looking ahead to summer now.

Did you know there is financial aid for the summer semester? Aid is available for summer semester classes and is awarded to students based on two academic year FAFSAs as well as the summer aid application.

For summer 2023, they will need the 2022–23 FAFSA (no longer available after June 30, 2023) and the 2023–24 FAFSA on file, as well as the 2023 summer aid application (available starting Feb. 1). If you and your student have not filled out the 2023–24 FAFSA (available on Viterbo's financial aid webpage), now is the perfect time to do that.

Not only will it prepare your student for summer classes, but you will be ahead of the game for the next academic year.

Did You Know?

Viterbo has launched a new varsity Esports program, with the regular season beginning Feb. 6 and playoffs starting March 27. Team members will compete in the Varsity Plus Division of the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) Starleague playing four games: Overwatch 2, Valorant, Rocket League and Call of Duty.
