A Message from President Glena Temple |

Dear parents and families,
The spring semester began Monday, and it is wonderful to have campus alive again with the energy, activity, and optimism that always accompanies the return of our students. I am very confident we will be able to successfully complete the semester in the in-person classroom format in which it began.
This of course requires the continued cooperation of every member of the Viterbo community. I am sure your student, and also many of you, are tired of being reminded of the importance of social distancing, wearing a mask, etc., but I ask you once again to encourage your loved one to follow the university’s safety measures and testing procedures. We all hope that as the year goes on and the vaccine becomes more widely distributed things will begin to return to normal, but until it does, we must remain vigilant.
As education professionals, our most sacred duty is to look after the welfare and safety of our students. Whether in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic or any other issue, we know you are entrusting your student to our care. I can assure you we take our obligations very seriously.
There was great information shared and questions asked during the Jan. 12 virtual town hall for parents. For those unable to attend, we have a video recording and summary of the town hall.
On behalf of everyone at Viterbo University, I wish all of you and your students a very happy, healthy, and successful 2021.
Glena Temple

Out with the Old
A fall semester like none before came to a close in December, with cherished Viterbo University traditions taking place in new forms. The annual President's Holiday Dinner, for example, normally has students gathered at tables while faculty and staff members wait on them in a gesture of fellowship and good cheer. This year, faculty and staff still served up a holiday dinner, but it was done with all the health and safety precautions called for in a pandemic. Check out a collection of photos from the event. |

In with the New
The Viterbo University community kicked off the new semester in traditional fashion, marking Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 18, by taking part in a wide array of community service projects for charitable and nonprofit organizations. Service sites included Place of Grace, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater La Crosse, the Warming Center, and many others. Students also made and donated hand-tied fleece blankets and sleeping mats made by weaving strips of plastic bags together. The Viterbo Flickr account has a new album of photos from the service projects on MLK Day, which also featured many other activities. |

Faculty Focus:
John Neumann
A 2012 graduate of Viterbo’s Dahl School of Business, John Neumann returned to campus two years ago to teach. An assistant professor, Neumann brings marketing skills honed at Organic Valley to the classroom. He also provides real-world professional experience to Viterbo students at his marketing company, Core Strategy.

Winter Blues or Worse, We Want to Help Students
LeeAnn Van Vreede | counseling services director
It is not uncommon that individuals struggle with feeling “blue” during the winter months. The weather is less than desirable, the days are short and gloomy, and the pandemic is still in full force. How does one know if they are struggling with more than winter blues?
Major depression and seasonal affective disorder are two very common conditions that occur during the short days and long nights of winter. There are many ways to address the symptoms, but Viterbo students need to remember they are not alone. Please know that the counseling services office offers services to all Viterbo students at no charge and can be one of the first places students go for support. Visit our webpage for more information.
NEW: This year Viterbo has launched a 24/7/365 online service and app, My SSP, for undergraduate and international students for call/chat support, articles, podcasts, assessments, and more. Students can check out the My SSP page to learn how to download the app or access the web-based format. |
Housing Application Process Has Begun
The 2021-22 housing applications are now available. This year, our housing selection process will be completely digital and all in one place, using Viterbo’s THD Self-service. Your student can submit a contract and match with roommates until Feb. 26; housing selection will take place March 2–4.
Sophomore students will choose from housing options in Rose, Canticle, Treacy, and McDonald; junior and senior students will choose from housing options in La Verna or Clare. You can explore all of our housing options using Viterbo’s virtual tour or by joining us for an apartment tour on Feb. 16 or 17.
For step-by-step directions on everything from applying to living on campus to securing a specific apartment (as well as answers to frequently asked questions), see our Housing Selection Guide. For more information, call Residence Life at 608-796-3116 or email us.

Let Us Help Make Scholarship Searches Easier
Scholarships are a great way to help make college more affordable. If you are interested in learning more about the scholarship search process visit our Financial Literacy website for more information or view this 10-minute video on how to begin the scholarship search process. Together we can partner on supporting your student on strategies to help reduce the costs of attending college. Please encourage your student to reach out should they have any finance-related questions or concerns.
FAFSA Priority Deadline Rapidly Approaching The 2020-21 academic year is only half over, but it’s NOT too early to start thinking about financial aid for the next academic year. Parents and students can submit the 2021-22 FAFSA today using their 2019 tax return data.
Our priority deadline is Feb. 1. Filing by Feb. 1 ensures the student receives maximum consideration for available funds. Filing after that date can reduce the amount of financial aid offered to students as funds become depleted.

Viterbo University’s spring semester has begun and as things proceed over the coming weeks and months you might be wondering how things are going for your student. Check out our Supporting Your Student Month-by-Month page for ideas on what students might need to talk about but won't bring up on their own. Here are a few suggested conversation starters for January and February:
-
Tell me more about your friends on campus and how they spent their breaks.
-
Have you found any new interests since this school year started?
-
How are you maintaining a healthy lifestyle?
-
What have you liked/disliked about your current housing situation?
-
Have you thought about where you might live next year? Have you completed housing sign up?

It was 80 years ago this month that the centerpiece of Viterbo's campus first opened for classes. Now known as the Murphy Center, the building was a tangible sign of the institution's transition from St. Rose Normal School to a full-fledged college named for the town in Italy that was home to St. Rose. Legend has it that the Viterbo name was decided upon during a card game with leading members of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration.
