A Message from Kirsten Gabriel |

Greetings V-Hawk parents and families,
As we move into the month of July, I’m feeling energized by the beauty of our Wisconsin summers, campus summer projects and improvements, and the excitement of our incoming V-Hawk students and families. (Remember all the energy and excitement of STAR week? See below for a trip down memory lane!) We hope summer has been energizing and restorative for you and your family as well.
August will be here before we know it, and we’re incredibly excited about our plans and ideas for the new academic year and the return of our students. Two of the fall events we’re most looking forward to are:
• Family Day (Saturday, Sept. 24): We are so looking forward to having you, our V-Hawk families, back on campus to celebrate Family Day 2022! We have all sorts of great family-friendly events and activities in store, including a very special Family Day Service Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. Watch your email or check our Family Day website soon for more details.
• Inauguration of President Rick Trietley (Friday, Oct. 14): Leadership matters, and we’re incredibly blessed to have a servant leader like Rick Trietley at our helm. We’ll be celebrating the inauguration of Viterbo’s 10th president during our annual St. Francis Week observance. See the inauguration page for more information.
As you plan for the new academic year, consider revisiting your access to your student’s educational and financial information and ensuring that your student is protected in the case of a medical emergency. Information about FERPA (the federal law that governs student records), Advance Care Planning, and setting up health care power of attorney can be found in the parents and families section of our website.
I hope you enjoy perusing the helpful and timely news from residence life, counseling services, and the business office; learning about two of our fantastic community members, Dr. Andrew Hamilton and Melissa Giefer; and checking out links to photo galleries and resources. Happy reading!
Lastly, thank you — from all of us — for sharing your student with us. Viterbo is a special place because of the community we’ve created, and your student is a unique and important part of that community. Enjoy the rest of your summer, and we can’t wait to see you and your student back on campus in August!
All the best,
Kirsten Gabriel

Photographs and Memories
The newest batch of first-year Viterbo students recently took part in STAR (Student Transition and Registration) Week, one of the best weeks of the year for Kirsten Gabriel, vice president for student life and dean of students. “It’s just fun meeting new families who are becoming part of the Viterbo community,” she said.
We captured photos of the new students at STAR this year and posted them as a gallery on Viterbo’s Flickr page so students and parents can look back at the beginning of their Viterbo journey.
We’ve got lots of other photo galleries for reminiscing on Flickr, including STAR 2021, Move-in Day 2020, Move-in Day 2019, and much more, going back to 2010. |

Parents as Partners
Viterbo’s culture has a service-oriented core, but it’s not just students who get involved in working for the greater good.
Shout-out to parents Angie Meighan, Lisa Tesar, and Sharon Varsoke, who volunteered to help with Accepted Student Day on April 2 and graciously served on a panel as part of the Accepted Student Day event. These three helped our newest parents and families get a better sense of our culture and helped move them along in their transition to becoming Viterbo parents themselves.
If you’re feeling the urge to volunteer at orientation and Family Day this fall or at other events, please reach out to us by emailing studentlife@viterbo.edu. |

Faculty Focus:
Andrew Hamilton
History Professor Andrew Hamilton’s was a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 2007 when he accepted a request to fill in for a Viterbo professor going on sabbatical. He loved the atmosphere and engagement with students here so much that he joined the Viterbo community the first chance he got.

Make the Fall Semester Move-in Smooth
Fall semester is around the corner, and we’ve been busy getting campus housing ready for students. Is your student ready? You can help them be well prepared for move-in day by keeping the following information in mind.
Returning students can move in from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Friday–Sunday, Aug. 26–28. Clare residents will check in directly at the Clare front desk. All other residents should stop in the Hawk’s Nest to check in.
Students desiring an early move-in for any reason can apply online. A charge of $30 per day may apply.
Returning students can move in early at no charge on Wednesday, Aug. 24, in exchange for volunteering during new student move-in, which runs from 8 a.m.–noon Thursday, Aug. 25
For more information, email the residence life staff. |
We Are There for Our Students
During our recent STAR week, the counseling services office got a chance to talk with incoming students and their families about the many ways we can help students. Maybe you remember that from when your student first started.
In the spirit of education and awareness, I’d like to remind current students and families about the benefits of counseling services. Our licensed staff members provide high quality and confidential services to all students at no charge, either in-person or via videoconferencing (if in the state of Wisconsin).
We are acutely aware that college can be challenging and the benefit of a nonjudgmental supportive conversation cannot be stressed enough. Whether it’s one visit to our office or many, we strive to support, advocate, and navigate the unique personal experiences of our Viterbo students.
Students in need of counseling services now don’t have to wait until fall to check in with counseling services. We’re there for them. Just have your student check our scheduling site.
If you have any questions about our services please reach out to me at jsmcknight@viterbo.edu.
I’m so looking forward to having students back on campus in August. Meanwhile, have a great rest of the summer.

News You Can Use from the Business Office The Viterbo business office looks forward to welcoming your student back to campus this fall. Meanwhile, let's take care of business with a few friendly reminders.
The 2022 fall semester billing will be generated on Monday, Aug. 1. The deadline to confirm enrollment is Friday, Aug. 26. All registered students are required to confirm enrollment and can do so in one of two ways:
-
Make a minimum down payment of $500 toward the semester’s charges (it is not necessary to call if the payment is made online or mailed). Checks mailed to the business office must be received no later than Aug. 26.
-
Verify with the business office via phone call that the student’s financial aid award, private loan, or third-party funding is finalized and will disburse and pay for all charges billed to the account.
The deadline to pay accounts in full to avoid interest for fall 2022 is Monday, Oct. 31, and the final day to have accounts paid in full, including interest, is Friday, Dec. 16. An email notice will be sent to students and approved parent proxies with reminders about these dates.
For all other important dates, please visit the Student Information page.
Students can add parents and family members as a proxy if they want them to have direct access to their account and academic information.
If you have any questions regarding your student account, please call the business office at 608-796-3850.

In 2001, Viterbo University became the first university in the world to offer a master’s degree in servant leadership, and Viterbo remains the leader in servant leader education. This year, Viterbo launched a new seven-week online servant leadership certificate program, which has a new session starting Sept. 13. This fall also sees the start of the university’s new ethical leadership doctoral degree program.
