A Message from Tina Johns
Tina Johns

Greetings V-Hawk parents and families,

It was great seeing and meeting so many of you at Family Day on Sept. 25. There were many fun events planned and things that were happening all over campus and in the La Crosse area. I know Hannah Amann, student engagement coordinator, sent out a survey on Monday to a number of you who were in attendance asking for feedback about the day. We look forward to reviewing that feedback to make Family Day 2022 an even better experience. Thank you for taking time to complete that survey. If you did not receive the survey link in your email, you can complete the survey here.

In just a few short weeks, we will be at that mid-semester point. Your students will get a well-deserved break from classes on Friday, Oct. 22. What we find is that the period leading up to mid-semester break can be full of assignments, papers, and exams so if you are hearing any notes of “stress” from your students, please have them reach out and talk with their advisors or Counseling Services.

Please save the date of Oct. 28 for our next virtual parent and family town hall, which will run from 6-7 p.m. CDT. Attendees will hear from various employees providing updates in their respective departments. The event will provide you an opportunity to ask questions you may have about your students experiences this semester.

As always, thank you for sharing your student with us. We appreciate and value the trust you place in us to help support your student’s future career and life goals.

CAMPUS CONNECTIONS
Viterbo welcome back bash
Tastes of Tradition

Fall semester has featured most of the traditions Viterbo is known for, including the Welcome Back Bash (above), Family Day, St. Francis Week, and the annual Viterbo Days alumni weekend, which was back on campus after being held virtually last year. We even had the pet blessing event, which drew everything from dogs and cats to lizards and A HORSE!

Check out the photo galleries from those events and more.

Viterbo play
Artistic Pursuits

Viterbo's Fine Arts Center, which turned 50 years old this year, is back in action, The first student theatre production of the year, Lysistrata, was given an outdoor staging for Viterbo Days. The weekend also included a gala choral concert with alumni choir members joining in.

Encourage your student to enrich their college experience with the arts. Check out the schedule on the Fine Arts Center website.

COUNSELING CORNER
College Mental Health Checklist for Parents

LeeAnn Van Vreede | counseling services director

College is a stressful time for many students. The transitions of university life can be overwhelming and difficult. When students struggle, parents often feel confused and unsure of how to help. As a parent, what can you do? What should you look for? Here are some tips to help your child through their college experience.

Stay in Touch. Check in on your student frequently. In addition to texting, make sure to set aside time regularly for phone conversations. Be comfortable asking direct questions about how they are feeling, how their stress level is, what they are doing with their free time, and note any changes.

Know the Signs. Pay attention to changes in mood, interests, social interactions, or sleep patterns. Be aware that these changes can be common symptoms associated with depression, anxiety, or general signs of distress.

Forget the Stigma. If your child is struggling, prioritize getting help over anything else. Although a difficult time for everyone, making sure to emphasize mental health over schoolwork or sports is essential.

Need More Help? Viterbo University has mental health services available through the Counseling Services Center or encourage your student to download the My SSP app.

Why Budget?
Budgeting is important for everyone, and for students it is important while they are in school and especially after they graduate.

Helpful websites for budgeting: GradReady, Smart About Money, and Master Your Money at OppU are informative websites that allow your student to create a profile that tracks their spending, gives advice for financial planning that works with their budget, and helps them figure out the best way to manage their debt. There are a variety of resources available and many are free. Don't be afraid to research different options to find the best fit.
