 Let's Change Our World
A Letter from President Glena Temple
Glena Temple

We have just finished the final weeks of the 2018-19 academic year at Viterbo University.  Some of you are experiencing the end of your first year as a college parent, and others attended Spring Commencement on May 11th.  To the parents of graduating seniors, a sincere “thank you” and “congratulations.”  I hope you enjoyed the special moments of graduation week, took many photos, and know that we are very pleased to see our graduates embark on a successful and satisfying career.

For the parents and families of students who will return to Viterbo for the 2019–20 academic year, several campus improvements await students in the fall. There will be a new Welcome Center in the Reinhart Center for prospective students and families and the renovated La Verna apartments. Viterbo has also added a new personal counselor to our staff.

No matter where you and your student are in the college journey, this is a great time to remember you are an important part of your student’s support system. Thank you for entrusting your student to us this academic year. I truly hope you find Viterbo is the place where they belong.

Each year can and should bring on new excitement as you continue to see your student learn and grow into the wonderful young adults that you have help create.

Enjoy your student and know that we are excited to have them return to us this fall semester!  To the parents of our graduating students, please continue to stay in touch and share with us where your students are making an impact in the world!
Internships
Summer is the time for Internships

Not if, but when! Summer is a fantastic time for your student to spend time connecting what they’ve learned at Viterbo to the work world. Summer internships can be done anywhere in the world, and may count for university credit or be a no-credit resume builder.

Internships allow your student to experience the roles, expectations, and behaviors of the professional world. Students learn about their strengths, interests, problem-solving skills, and gain the ability to work with clients. Students also gain experience they can note on their resume, and make great connections and professional references.

Encourage your student to talk with Career Services to find out more about this MUST HAVE learning experience!

FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and YOU!

Viterbo University understands a parent’s interest in their student's academic progress.  By federal law, however, there are limitations on the information that can be shared. Once enrolled in a higher education institution, regardless of age, the student is the custodian of their educational records.  FERPA treats records and information about a student's academic or conduct status as confidential.  Therefore, such information cannot be released to anyone outside of the university without the student's written consent or unless directed to do so by a court of law.

Will I see my student's grades or be notified of my student's academic progress?
No. Even if you're paying the tuition, Viterbo cannot disclose or discuss your student's academic status or grades without written permission from your student. Parents may contact their student to provide them access to their educational or financial records via the parent portal in VitNet.  If the student is unwilling to grant this access, the parent may submit a form, along with a copy of the tax return documenting dependency. Information may be provided in this case, at Viterbo's discretion.

Where can I find more information about FERPA?
